THE ROUND ROBIN EPISODE π π
ππ€ EPISODE 9: THE ROUND ROBIN EPISODE π π£
What happens when @mouthpiecesam gives up control of the podcast?
Probably exactly what youβd expect. π
This week, Cousin Adam aka CHEFBOYAREGOS π¨βπ³, Swervin Mervin π·οΈ and DAMETIME β° are back in the Baseline Studio. But this time, thereβs a twist:
EVERYBODY GETS THE CHAIR. ποΈ
Different host. Different questions. Different energy.
And everybody gets ONE questionable line call that can instantly send the host packing.
OUT! π ROTATE!
From thereβ¦ things get weird. π
Pickleball debates. Trash talk. Walk-up music. Questionable opinions. Unexpected moments. A few surprises. And absolutely nobody respecting Mouthpiece Samβs authority in his own studio. π€π
Ohβ¦ and just because somebody couldn't make it to the studio doesn't necessarily mean they won't find a way onto the show. ππ
This one is less interview and more four pickleball friends handing each other the microphone and seeing what happens.
No script.
No fanboys.
No idea where this thing is going.
Welcome to the Round Robin. π π
π STEP BETWEEN THE LINES.
π€ GRAB YOUR MOUTHPIECE.

speaker-0: Tonight, everybody gets the chair. And when you're sitting here I want you guys to feel like that this is your show.
speaker-2: Welcome back to the No Fanboy Podcast. Follow me at Chefboyaregos baby.
speaker-1: What up, what up, pickleheads? Alright, it's your boy Spider Man.
speaker-3: what up, what up, what up, pickleheads?
speaker-0: What up wad up wad up PICKLEHEADS All right, all right. No script. We're jumping right into it, guys. And there's a couple things that I want to say before I bring on my guests. I want to thank all the listeners, all the watchers for tuning in. I want to let everybody know that I'm doing fine after last week. In fact, I'm doing more than fine. I'm reckless. I'm fearless. I'm not scared of any bag. As long as it doesn't hit me in the face or the nuts. I'm good to go. So our release party was August twenty second, and as of this recording, today is September twenty fourth and a lot of stuff has happened. The podcast has really opened my eyes in a lot of ways. And Merv, you were definitely right when you saw when you said to me that social media is gonna really, really introduce a lot of interesting conversations. But since the podcast has started, 44X20 now has over two thousand views. Dylan's Instagram had had over ninety-five hundred views. I've met all sorts of interesting people. Shout out to the young boy down at the hub, Vincent Ho, a 15-year-old that I played with who reached out to me. When I got on the court with this kid, I felt like I was the youngster. It was like next level maturity. thank him for reaching out. Love to get him on the pod Sometime. And then on Instagram, shout out to some of my new f followers, Wally in New York. you gotta see this guy. I'll send him to you. Yeah, ex ping or I don't know, I guess he's still a ping pong player, sponsored by JOOLA The dude did not want to play pickleball, did not want to play pickleball, was trolling pickleball, and now all of a sudden he's a pickleball head. and he's he's live on Insta. I've had all sorts of new connections. all sorts of interesting people who've reached out to me and I I want to thank all those people for just saying what's up to me. I want to thank all those people who've invited me to their new games. And one of the most interesting things that's happened to me is being noticed in the wild. I was at a tournament a couple weeks ago and we were getting our ass kicked and someone yelled out, Go mouthpiece Sam. And that was amazing. I've ha we've had our first company reach out to us and give us free gear. my very first paddle review is now live on YouTube and I wanna thank Eleven Zero Sports for that opportunity. And then also doing the pod, maybe my cousin Adam will say different, but I've learned a lot about my own game. I mean, having to sit down here at the table with with all my my fellow players. I'm becoming a student of the game. I'm I'm recording. I'm looking backwards. I'm I'm putting some insight into it. And then I'm getting really tight with the friends that I already have. I'm getting even tighter with my family and I'm meeting new people all over the place that I'm connecting with and I'm getting tighter with them too. And then most importantly, my original goal was to do about 10 episodes and see if it was fun and decide if I wanted to keep going. And this has been fun as fuck. It's been super, super fun. I've had tons and tons of fun. And there's something else funny that started to happen with this podcast. The more that we do this, the more this room is starting to feel really familiar. It's starting to feel a lot like a pickleball court. Because when you have a great game going, everybody wants in. And right now. I think that we've got the best game in town. Over these first couple episodes, we started building a roster of some of the best, most interesting people I know. Adam, wake up. Different personalities, stories, opinions, styles. And every time we get everybody together, the games are getting a little bit more interesting. And some of these guys have been back enough times that they're getting a little too comfortable.
speaker-2: Mm-hmm.
speaker-0: I got MERV back! That's right, he's even got his own walk-up music. My guy Merv, welcome back. Thank you. Merv's definitely one of these people who we've become tighter and tighter as this pod's developed. Yeah. Alright. Damian's back. My unc, your uncle Tonight's favorite unc the legend. Dame Time And then last, the guy who's getting real comfortable in the co-host chair. It's my cousin. It's your cousin. It's the cousin. Chefboyaregos
speaker-2: REEEEEGOS
speaker-0: Ho ho. I like when you go pickle Show the world you smile Adam You know one of the other names we got for him. Adam twenty seven. to welcome you back to the pod. Welcome back to the pod cuz. Are you just staring me down like Kobe Bryant?
speaker-1: Thanks for having me, cuz. What up, what up, what up, picklehead.
speaker-0: All right, so we're all here and j and of course just like the game, not everybody can be here. The Volley Llama JT, he really wanted to be here tonight, but he's in France. RJ, Captain America, he really wanted to be here tonight, but he was doing something else. And then, of course, our guy, Dylan, he wanted to be here so badly, but he's in Idaho. Sorry, Dylan. So I started thinking, when you got a good game and everybody wants in, what do you do? What do you do, Adam?
speaker-1: You you pick your A squad, baby. Or that.
speaker-0: You rotate. Different partners, different matchup. Everybody's gonna get some playing time here. Do you guys get where I'm going yet? Anybody? Anybody? You do? Okay, okay. so that's exactly what we're gonna do tonight. Except we're not rotating the court. We're rotating the host chair. Tonight, everybody gets the chair. And when you're sitting here I want you guys to feel like that this is your show. You can choose a co-host, you can choose a topic, you can ask questions, you can decide who talks, you can decide who how the conversation goes. and for me, what I get to do is I get to be a guest. So what that means for me is I will sit in one of your chairs and I'll be wearing the mouthpiece and I will sit quietly. Now, if you want to grill me the entire time and that's how you want to use your five to seven minutes to just ask me questions about my life and my pickleball game. you know, that's what this podcast is about. Feel free to ask me those questions. but you want if you want to ask the group, that's probably gonna make more of a compelling conversation for the listeners. Now we have one golden rule for this game. So the one golden rule is everybody in the room through the course of the episode is going to get one questionable line call. And what that means is while the person is talking, for example, Adam is up there talking. Adam, just do this, blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah,
speaker-2: What?
speaker-1: Blah blah blah.
speaker-0: blah. You're boring. You're an uninteresting guest I'm going to yell, Out. And you're going to go, what? You know, like you would if you thought it was in. And you got to get up. You got to stop. Rotate next man up. Just like on the court, the call stands. No replay, no appeal, no vote. Out is out, Merv okay. Okay. If somebody calls you out, you immediately lost the host chair. No finishing your thought, no finishing your topic. Get up. Out means rotate. so for the for the questionable line call, we all have one in an episode. So use it wisely. real quickly, I want you guys to come over here. You can come over here one at a time or you can come over here all of you at the same time. It doesn't matter. Come on over. Just I want to show you the buttons real quickly.
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-0: here's mine.
speaker-2: The chip, it's got the raised lighting up
speaker-0: And then here's Adam. See Adam and then Merv.
speaker-2: Mm.
speaker-0: And you just press it stop to stop it.
speaker-2: Is there the button where it's like right answer that ding
speaker-0: All right. So we're doing round robin style. Who wants to go first? First up, Chefboyaregos Uncle
speaker-2: Alert. Dude, my god, did you hear Mouthpiecesam is on TikTok now? What?
speaker-1: Does that
speaker-0: That's right, I'm on TikTok, bruh. No cap, baby.
speaker-1: Shout out to all the uncs Follow us at 44X20 Pickleball if you're ready to see the best TikTok freaking popping on the West Coast baby les do it
speaker-0: it. You're the one who told me to get on it, Chef. We'll see you on the TikTok, bruh. we're live. Can you hear me?
speaker-2: Welcome back to the No Fanboy Podcast. Follow me at Chefboyaregos baby. The king is back. Alright, I got I got a question for the panel here. When is the best time to utilize the lob? We can go around the horn. I'm throwing the ball to Sam first.
speaker-0: You didn't what up, what up pickleheads?
speaker-2: Yeah, it's a no fanboy podcast now. What up
speaker-0: what up, what up
speaker-2: pickleheads
speaker-0: Okay, what's the question? Can you play my music at least?
speaker-2: That's what we have for you. Sorry. It's my show now. So you don't get a say Sitman.
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-0: Play the Play my walk-up music at least.
speaker-2: I'm the captain now. Fine. This is your new walk-up music. That's
speaker-0: Ha ha ha.
speaker-3: Yeah.
speaker-2: that's Sam live from getting body bag last week's folks. Thanks for tuning in to the body bag episode. All right. When is the best time to utilize the lob?
speaker-0: I I've got two answers for this. Best time to utilize the lob, in my opinion, I'm gonna go with always and never.
speaker-2: Mm-hmm.
speaker-0: First of all, I think you should always do the shot that makes you feel the best, right? The lob is a really like high risk, high reward shot. So when you hit it and you nail it, it feels really, really good. And so if it feels really, really good, you should probably just keep doing it over and over and over again. But if it starts to land out, it feels really, really, really bad. So it just depends on what mindset you're in, I would say. Right. Like if you're looking for the dopamine hit and you're feeling risky, like go for it. but if you're playing competitive and s really if you're playing in four and a half plus, which I've learned the hard way, which you guys heard about the last episode, it's probably not a good idea 'cause you're gonna get cracked in the ribs by a young boy.
speaker-2: What about with the knockout punch? Boom. Boom. Lob to the back line.
speaker-0: That's the body bag one. Splash.
speaker-2: All right, th thanks for your answer, Sam, and appreciate you being here on the No Fanboy podcast today. We're gonna go over to the man Dame Dolla When is the When is the best time to utilize the lob, Dame? Play it. And do you and
speaker-0: Played walk up music.
speaker-2: do you do the lob? Nah. Just do it. Walk-up music's lame.
speaker-0: Bong bong boom.
speaker-3: I rarely, rarely lob. But I think the best time to do it is after you're in a dink battle and you gotta you're speeded up slow to you gotta go deep to the far corner.
speaker-0: Sure.
speaker-2: So so you get in a lull, you lull them to sleep and then you hit with the bang?
speaker-3: necessarily lulling him to sleep because I like to be active at the net, so I'm gonna I'm an active dinker and so I'm gonna get him focused on this and then I'm giving them that.
speaker-2: Yeah. So lull to sleep with this, get focused on that. And then are you aiming for like their backhand or the middle or are you just you just doing it?
speaker-3: I I just usually go deep corner if I'm gonna do it. Opposite deep corner, 'cause that's the biggest margin of error that I Yeah, yeah.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-3: And and and to finish my answer, yeah. I don't usually lob on people that are under forty because they feast on lobs if you don't do it perfectly.
speaker-2: So you target the forty-five and up crew.
speaker-3: Well I don't necessarily target. I it's not a a shot I use a lot. Yeah. But it it's it's something that I like to throw in the mix once in a while. Yeah. Yeah.
speaker-2: Sam only hits it on old ladies. That's not true. Mouthpiece. Alright, we're going to
speaker-3: And really short people. And really short people. That's when he Sam really uses a lot.
speaker-2: Mouthpiece. Alright, we're
speaker-0: What?
speaker-2: moving along. Thank you, Dame. That was very insightful. So Swervin Merv, when is the best time to utilize the lob my man?
speaker-1: Best time I always do it when I'm against like 3.0's 'cause they're so like focused in the kitchen, like their whole body forward, you know? So their feet is like planted waiting for to get waiting to get like a drive, trying to get blocks and stuff. So if you lob it'll throw off their whole game. And of course the seniors. You always gotta lob the seniors, you know what I mean? Yeah, love
speaker-2: it love it my answer is I I like when you see people you can see their forward and backward like lateral motion right so when you see someone there's a lot of people that sprint to the net right and again I target I agree like age age before beauty height like right you're not gonna do it on a super athletic six six guy
speaker-0: Get twenty seven.
speaker-2: But if someone sprints toward like we were playing on Wednesday yesterday and I like hitting it on the first shot. So then it gets them thinking the rest of the game. Is he and I might not use it for the rest of the game, but it kind of gets keeps them on their toes and kind of throws them off balance. It's like for me, it's like a changeup. Like if you're a pitcher, it you don't use the changeup all the time, but it gets them thinking. I like to aim for backhands and the middle too. I love it when we're dinking. And I like it on the move when I'm dinking with my backhand and then I'll switch and like if they hit it to the side and then I try and lob it with top spin over the middle.
speaker-1: Okay.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: all right. for the next question on the No Fan Boy podcast, what is your biggest pickleball bad habit if you had to assess yourself? And we're gonna go in the same order. So Sam, back to you.
speaker-0: Ooh. I have too many to count.
speaker-2: Give us your like top three.
speaker-0: I think everybody knows the unnecessary talking is obviously the number one. especially now that I've from locked in episode I've learned that it happens the most when I'm like logging out. That's the number one. I would say the second one would be spitting. and the third one would be mostly f footwork related.
speaker-2: Nice. Anything else? Yeah. what
speaker-0: Beyond it? Beyond that?
speaker-2: what do you want to improve on most this year?
speaker-0: it's the out flexibility and endurance for sure.
speaker-2: I'd like to see you do the splits.
speaker-0: I'm getting closer, dude. I can touch.
speaker-2: It's my podcast now. That's you doing the splits. That's your splits music.
speaker-0: I I'm I'm getting closer. I can almost touch my toes.
speaker-2: Hell yeah, hell yeah. Alright, thanks Sam. appreciate that. And on to Dame Dolla what is your biggest pickleball bad habit?
speaker-3: Yeah, yeah, that's all.
speaker-2: Yeah, fuck it. We're bringing it back.
speaker-3: Well I just want to say that that walk-up music kind of is an auditory simulation of one of my worst b bad habits and that's running up too quickly sometimes.
speaker-2: I'm gonna lob you And you're in the age bracket. Uncle Alert
speaker-0: It was just his birthday recently. Ask him ask him how old he is.
speaker-2: I'll give you sixty five body bags.
speaker-3: Yeah. I'll take him. How old is that? Three guesses. Three guesses. Something really popular.
speaker-0: It's a good thing he w didn't turn this last year.
speaker-2: I'm gonna go with 65.
speaker-3: you're gonna have to go higher with your number, sir.
speaker-2: Okay, well that was that was I always guess younger, right? It's the nice, respectful thing to do.
speaker-3: Seven
speaker-2: Dang. Alright, I'll give you sixty-seven lob
speaker-0: The kids are looking at us super weird when we call the c call it six seven 'cause they said that's so two thousand twenty-five.
speaker-2: Damn, UNC ALERT Alright, back to you, Dame. What is your biggest pickleball bad habit? So running up, you said?
speaker-3: Running running up a little bit and just being too aggressive 'cause I feel like when I play more with purpose and with poise, I play better than when I play with power.
speaker-2: What what do you want to improve on most this year?
speaker-3: I wanna get low. I wanna get really, really low while play.
speaker-2: That's how I stay locked in. Tune into the locked in episode. That's how I get locked in. Stay low. I I feel you, brother.
speaker-0: We did say that. Stare at him like Kobe Bryant.
speaker-2: yeah. All right, Swervin Mervin. What if what is your biggest pickleball bad habit?
speaker-1: I'd say when I get really comfortable I start playing really nonchalant. It kinda makes me look like an asshole
speaker-0: That's not what you said when you walked in today. What are you said, my biggest pickable I'm having a bet I'm I'm having a problem.
speaker-1: like that's for later.
speaker-0: That sounded like a bad habit.
speaker-1: I'm turning into a super villain then. Yeah.
speaker-0: Ha ha ha ha.
speaker-1: I'm going through my villain story arc right now.
speaker-0: shit, that's the body bag music. I'm scared, I gotta run, I gotta leave.
speaker-2: All right. So yeah, what what's your biggest pickleball bad habit?
speaker-1: Yeah, I just started playing nonchalant and kinda lazy. Just kinda in the kitchen, kinda like easy.
speaker-2: Locking. Not bending your knees. So how do you get how do you lock back in?
speaker-1: When the opponent starts playing better.
speaker-2: So you you're like Sam. You need to get bagged a couple of times. You need to like yeah.
speaker-0: He also talks shit to get in the game. Yeah.
speaker-2: So is that what's keeping you from I don't know what your score is if you're like a 4.0 trying to be a 4.5, but is that what you're trying to improve on most? Is it just the nonchalant or is there anything else? Trying to do the splits, bro?
speaker-1: Yeah. I said this pretty much a little bit of everything, honestly. everybody always can improve their game. Yeah. I'm not I'm not saying I'm good or anything. I'm just saying like it's too much to focus on. just lately I just been realizing I've been lazy. Kinda like not trying a little bit. You know what I mean?
speaker-2: Sounds like fresh meat for the North vs South tournament. Tune in
speaker-1: Hopefully North can bring some competition because it's been boring lately for me, you know.
speaker-0: Ha ha ha ha.
speaker-2: Speaking of West Coast, native San Diegan and local pickleball podcast host, Sam Orlansky, I got a question for you, bud. Yeah. If you had to build the perfect pickleball player using people you know, just just how would you build it? From forehand to backhand, drop to band. Give me names, gimme details.
speaker-0: Are you just gonna like bust my ass for fanboying after this?
speaker-2: No, this was my best question. I saved the best for last. Okay.
speaker-0: So
speaker-2: This is the fanboy question on the no fanboy podcast. Follow Chefboyaregos
speaker-0: I will take Kevin Chicas' two-handed backhand. Ooh. For sure. I'll take the Thinhman's overhead put away. A little butterfly badminton kick.
speaker-2: What about the Bulgarian backhand? Are you taking mine or Dylan's?
speaker-0: Dylan's for sure.
speaker-2: Damn, dude.
speaker-0: Yeah, his more refined
speaker-2: You're not getting a seat back after that comment.
speaker-0: Time out. Who's up? Time out. OUT
speaker-2: No no no, we still gotta OUT No. I used it you're gonna shot Damn. You're gonna shot
speaker-0: You're out. Don't worry. You did great.
speaker-2: Unfollow 44X20 You chose Dylan's over mine, dude. I'm unfollowing
speaker-1: That's pretty slow.
speaker-2: on all socials.
speaker-0: Wait, I need to change the shirt
speaker-2: Shirt.
speaker-1: What up, what up, pickleheads? Alright, it's your boy Spider Man.
speaker-0: Swing it like
speaker-1: That's not even mine. Spider-Man
speaker-3: Ha ha ha ha!
speaker-1: can't see right now. Anyways, I know I'm wearing a hero mask, but I've been a bit of a villain lately. I'm on my villain arc. Cancel me if you want. I don't care. nothing can hurt me right now. You know? anybody else don't care about anything when they're playing?
speaker-2: Let's go. Take
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-2: your webs and fucking bing bang. What's that SDSU kid? What's his name? Light work? I'm ready, the chef's ready. Dude, you such a G
speaker-3: Yeah.
speaker-1: All right, so on the court, when you notice people start getting mad at you, do you change the way you play or what do you do to make it worse or better for yourself? Or do you even care what people think about you? We'll start.
speaker-2: Start with the chef. I kinda like this
speaker-0: Wrong one. That's it though.
speaker-2: No I'm the don't dun don't
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-1: We'll start with our chef over here.
speaker-2: Well like I have a follow up question before I answer your question, a little bit of a clarifying question. So who am I playing? Am I in a tournament like and it's like, you know, ten ten or am I like in a social league with some like grandmas and Rancho Bernardo? All of the Okay. Well same answer for everything. Then I have two answers. If I'm like playing with some grandmas and Rancho Bernardo, shout out Karen. I'm just having a good time. I'm there for a workout from four to five thirty. Like I'm just having fun. If I'm in a tournament, it's social warfare, baby. I'm turning that turning that knob all the way to to high and I'm getting in their head 'cause yeah, I wanna win.
speaker-1: You you scared of somebody trying to fight you or anything or
speaker-2: No, if I'm playing in the south, if I'm playing in the south, you know we're turning that knob.
speaker-1: So
speaker-0: Ha ha ha.
speaker-1: you're trying to wake up in Mexico the next day, huh? Yeah.
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-1: It's like twenty minutes away from the hub, so you know. Yeah. It'll be it'll be quick.
speaker-2: yeah. I like tacos. That's nice. In the eighties or
speaker-0: We used to go to buy alcohol in high school. 90s bitch.
speaker-1: UNC ALERT
speaker-2: Mm-hmm.
speaker-1: Okay. Do you care about what people think about you when you're playing pickleball? Or if pe if people start getting mad at you, do you change the way you you play or the way you talk or anything? Or you just don't care?
speaker-3: I feel like I have a real cool head out there and usually I'm talking with my partner and I don't give a shit about what the other team's doing. We're having our own game on talk and that's what I focus on.
speaker-1: Okay. So what if somebody actually got mad at you? Are you what are you gonna tell them or are you gonna apologize or
speaker-3: You know, I mean if if I did something wrong, I'll apologize. If I didn't do anything wrong, I'm not apolog
speaker-2: What if he body bagged him? Would you apologize?
speaker-3: Did I do it intentionally?
speaker-2: I mean you were just trying to hit it as hard as you can. You had an overhead?
speaker-3: Okay, yeah. If I yeah, I'll apologize. If I hit you if I body you hard, I'll apologize.
speaker-2: What if it's a big jack guy with tattoos and he just stares at you after you thought he got to the other guys and
speaker-3: Then then I'm kind of staying on the back line. I'm
speaker-2: Yeah.
speaker-3: gonna take slow steps up to the kitchen.
speaker-2: There you go. Love it.
speaker-1: Okay, speaking
speaker-2: Dad got the rizz he's lighting up the land
speaker-1: Alright, Mr. Sam Orlansky.
speaker-2: It's
speaker-0: Ha ha ha ha.
speaker-1: Welcome back to your own pod, okay? I already know your answer next. Anyways. I'm just kidding.
speaker-2: time out out! I'm calling out! You call him out!
speaker-1: over the
speaker-0: I knew you had my back on. Alright, here you're up, Dame.
speaker-1: man.
speaker-3: what up, what up, what up, pickleheads?
speaker-2: I'm so
speaker-3: Yeah, so I guess I didn't understand the assignments.
speaker-0: Forget about the walk up music.
speaker-3: I've taken roll.
speaker-0: Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. Pickleball sorry.
speaker-1: That's
speaker-2: It's King swinging like a champ daddy, I'm the blue. Yeah,
speaker-1: All of it.
speaker-2: there you go.
speaker-0: And you can fade them out with the thing next to it.
speaker-3: You guys, I'm a band. I'm making my own music. I got I got four different things. I'm s I'm sound syncing. Okay.
speaker-2: My uncle's in a bandies in his sixties too.
speaker-0: Shout out Uncle Gary.
speaker-3: Yeah, so I you know I guess I got the assignment wrong because I just brought three topics and one of the topics I got, I'll ask you guys some questions about it, but
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-3: I did it right? Okay. So one of the one of the topics that I brought up is I love losing. And this is a fact about me. I love losing when I'm playing pickleball. And the biggest reason is because it means I'm playing up. And I learn a lot by it. So I love losing. Adam, what are your thoughts on losing?
speaker-1: Pickleball came.
speaker-2: Yeah. shit. Welcome back to the no fanboy. I mean, who am I losing to? Am I am I like I get
speaker-1: South, the south.
speaker-2: I get what you're saying. Like if I'm playing like up like in a four or five tournament and it was like learning lessons, like then it's like I didn't lose, I learned, right? Like in life. If you're playing with you always want to be like the dumbest person in the room or the least athletic on the pickleball court, that means you're playing and you're getting better so I agree with you in that sense. If I'm playing against people my level or worse though and I lose then I'm pissed.
speaker-3: So what what what flips the switch? What makes you go from just I love losing to I hate losing?
speaker-2: I mean, I I hate losing. I'm like pretty competitive where I don't even like losing in like my Monday, Wednesday like social leagues. So I think I flip the switch like if I'm down, right? Like if I'm up, I'm having fun, I'm hitting lobs, I'm like not super locked in. If I if I go down by like three or four more than that, I'm I'm getting pissed, I'm getting angry, I'm getting focused.
speaker-3: And see that's what that's what my next thing that I'd written down was that says it forces me to focus. If I'm losing, I'm focusing, I'm trying to figure out what the fuck's going on here, how do I stop it? How do I counter this? And so it forces me to focus, to think and I ask myself questions, right? I have self talk when I'm losing. Yeah. And and it's not I'm not beating myself up when I'm losing
speaker-2: Internal self talk or are you verbally No it's not like Sam.
speaker-3: It's it's all inside. But it but Sam at all. And mine my mine's all upbeat. Like I'm not I'm not kicking myself. I'm just I'm offering I'm I'm suggesting things about what could I have done right then or when I know I did something wrong, I go, yep, it was that and then I go on to the next point.
speaker-2: I love that for you, unc
speaker-3: Thank you, thank you, thank you. We're gonna move on.
speaker-2: Mm-hmm.
speaker-3: So I I don't know quite how to ask that question exactly like I did a second ago, but do you ever love losing?
speaker-1: Mm, no. I don't love it. I mean to me it doesn't matter. It's kinda rare, you know. if I do it's probably because of my partner or the weather or the ball. Or I know my paddle is like there's something wrong with my paddle.
speaker-2: it's delaminated
speaker-3: I love you.
speaker-2: You've had to b have been behind, right? So you're losing at that point. And so somehow you're turning it around to get that win. So that shows that you hate losing, I guess.
speaker-0: Yeah yeah, no not not one hundred percent I do. It dep it's like there's two ways to that, 'cause some sometimes I do really lock the fuck in and I I become amazing. Or I shit in bed and I get targeted and I hit everything. I just I'm all in my head and I can't get out of it.
speaker-2: But what happens after that game? So next game starts. That just happened to you. What now? How do you get that out of your head? How do you get back to positivity and winning?
speaker-0: I guess it's kinda like automatic. I I always treat every game like it's a new game. Like I always play different every game. Even if I played the same people, it's like it's like a whole different thing. Yeah. It's like a new beginning. Yeah. You love losing until you win, right? Like it's fun losing the first game and there's no sweeter feeling than coming back and and winning two straight.
speaker-1: You don't even know what you're talking about. You don't love losing. Fucking hate losing.
speaker-0: Maybe maybe a couple points. Timeout Mouthpiece. Did you not listen? I love losing until I win. Right. Like it's fun to go down. There's no better feel it's no fun when you like win, you know, you pickle someone. That is fun. But it's it's a great feeling to your point when you go down, maybe you even lose a game and then you win two straight and you come together and put it together. And I when Sam and I played about winning. When Sam and I played in a tournament, changing on the fly, we were banging everything, our first tournament ever. And then we realized we have to drop and we talked about it mid game and then we won. That's the sweetest feeling ever. Mm-hmm. Great topic, Dame
speaker-2: And see, that's a part of losing that that in increases your game, right? That that makes you better. So like I remember when Sam and I first started playing together, and we would get down four zero, five, zero all the time. And we just we had I even had the six-zero paddle at the time, and we were just laughing about it all the time. we're down six-zero. We'd come back so many times, and if we didn't win, we'd make it a game. And I always liked that part of losing with Sam early on. So Sam, talk to me about why you love losing.
speaker-1: I don't love losing. However, I might be the biggest loser, you know, according to my DUPR Check it. I definitely have a losing record. I don't love losing, but I'm not like my cousin who's a G over there who stares people in the face like Kobe Bryant when he bags them. I I'm kind of the opposite. Like, I don't love winning as much as some people do.
speaker-2: Yeah, yeah.
speaker-1: Yeah, like it's not and I'm comfortable losing. it doesn't usually bother me. it just ne me it just means that I have an opportunity to get better. Yeah.
speaker-2: you take it a little less serious than Adam, it sounds like
speaker-0: I'm gonna nominate you for the next season of the biggest loser. Just kidding. I'm nominating you for Survivor.
speaker-1: Hey, you know you can use number two.
speaker-2: He's number two.
speaker-0: You're a survivor, Sam. How do I meet?
speaker-1: Don't worry about it. I'm throwing my mouth. Peace out you
speaker-2: So, you know, I'd like to maybe ask a question. And you know what? I'm gonna run it backwards this time. So we're gonna start right where we left off.
speaker-1: Adam song again.
speaker-0: That's me. That's fine. Front, back, side to side, however you want it, Dame Dolla Okay.
speaker-2: Dame Dalla is going to ask you first then, Adam.
speaker-0: Okay.
speaker-2: so there's probably been times in your pickleball career, if we can call it that, where you thought you hit your ceiling. Let's talk about at least one of those instances and then talk about the feeling that you know that you have not hit your ceiling.
speaker-0: My illustrious career, you mean? Yeah.
speaker-2: illustrious career
speaker-0: I think I hit the ceiling. I shatter the ceiling every week and then I have to just keep breaking it. No, honestly, like I was just in Italy for two weeks and I came back and I was rusty. So I was like, shit, have I already hit my ceiling? Any anytime you take time off, I'm a big feel player. So I feel like if I I usually play two days a week, if I'm playing three or four, and if I'm playing singles, then doubles always feels easier, right? Like because you're covering less of the court. So I I would say after a singles match and I maybe played more than two or three times in a given week, I'm like, wow, I'm clicking. I feel good. I want to enter a tournament. Right. And then I I feel the opposite when I go on vacation and I come back and you know I'm out of shape and I play for, you know, one day a week. so hopefully that answered your question. But I feel like I'll hit my I don't feel like I've hit my ceiling. None of us have hit our ceiling, right? Like we're we're still three point five forever like that. Forever, baby. Yeah.
speaker-2: You know, you guys are young though. So like me, I started late. I've been playing a couple of years and I started out with kind of a good little backhand and then I made a significant jump early. But then I didn't really branch out a lot. And then once I started branching out, I felt like that's when I really started discovering new ceilings because different courts play different ways. So you'd go here and you'd go, wow, a lot these people play this kind of style of game. And then you'd play a little of that. And then you go to another court and they're playing a little bit different.
speaker-0: You're always on the ladder breaking the ceiling. You're like Mario in the game. You just keep going up and up and up.
speaker-2: Sam, Sam.
speaker-0: Timeout.
speaker-1: I finally play it. Play for a minute. Play it for a minute. My daughter made this for me. This is dope.
speaker-0: Shout out Kayli lighting up the lamp, Sam the sigma, moving in silence got
speaker-1: that swagger
speaker-0: that swagger, that natural defiance.
speaker-1: Running through life like a man on a mission
speaker-2: So Sam, yeah, I wanna talk to you about your ceiling and and like there's probably been times in your life where you felt like you hit a ceiling and then you broke that ceiling and then you got a new ceiling and
speaker-1: Yeah. when it comes to pickleball, like lately I feel like I'm at my ceiling, honestly. like I feel like I've j I've I've busted through and I've gotten a little bit further than I ever expected to already. and so, you know I I'm finding myself a little bit stuck getting to the next level. I'm also finding myself comparing myself to others who are younger, faster, more mobile, et cetera. And so it it's a little bit difficult to get to that next level when you've already sort of achieved so much. and I'm I'm just talking about physically. Like the the amount of games that I can complete in one day is nothing I would have ever expected. So
speaker-2: 'Cause I see you as you've made significant bounces multiple times along the way, is that as as far as I've known you. And when you started out, you were the worst out of our group. And then quickly you became one of the best out of the group. And then you would kind of pull the group up with your level because it would force our level up. And then it seems like in the last six months to me that you've made significant progress in position where you're putting the ball on the court and stuff. And I think that you may feel a ceiling right now because you've just stepped up so much. in the last six months. But you're gonna you're gonna be that ceiling's gonna be the floor.
speaker-1: Thank you for saying that.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-1: That was really nice to you.
speaker-0: Sam's blushing right now. His cheeks are as red as his hat. Which which cheeks though. Very flattering,
speaker-1: But I'll bad.
speaker-0: Dame. You're a great you're a great host. Yeah. If you had a podcast, I would
speaker-1: He should be in the 67 podcast.
speaker-2: We're s we're gonna s we're gonna still talk about about your ceiling and
speaker-1: Wait hold hold on a second. You gotta call timeout real quick. Call timeout. Time out, time out. I wanted to talk about somebody who I love. And that would be my cousin Adam. I love you today. Watch this young man
speaker-0: You didn't love me yesterday, Bo.
speaker-1: grow up from a little young boy to a hard-hitting slammer and to now my partner. He's gone from a young man to a big Mario. And I just wanted to wish you something very, very, very important.
speaker-0: is he getting me a birthday present? I am turning thirty-three on Sunday. Ready? Happy birthday. Thank you for you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday
speaker-1: Birthday Adam 27, cause his birthday's on the 27th. Happy birthday!
speaker-0: Birthday to you.
speaker-1: H, H Pee-pee why happy birthday, uh-huh. Happy birthday, yeah, putting on the candle on the birthday cake, the birthday cake the birthday cake, put another candle on the birthday cake, you're almost an unc today ole. Happy birthday to you, you're another year old today ole skip around the studio, skip around the studio, we won't shut up till you skip around the studio, skip around the studio, skip around the studio, we won't shut up till you skip around the studio.
speaker-0: Alright. I just wanna say one thing, Sam. I love you. hell yeah. Can I blow it out with the mouthpiece? fuck. I wouldn't Thank you.
speaker-1: Now play my music.
speaker-2: You know where that's been, right?
speaker-0: Pickle ball swingin like a champ Dylan's Dylan's
speaker-1: Dylan's showing up at all?
speaker-0: canceled. Dylan's canceled. Alright, do I get
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-0: more questions? Do I get the host chair back?
speaker-1: You got some more questions? I want some walk up. You can't. here he comes.
speaker-3: Dylan from Barnes Table Tennis Paddle and Ball. Table Tennis Paddle and Ball.
speaker-1: Dylan, you're live on the 44X20 podcast. What's up, what's up, what's up?
speaker-3: What's up, what's up, what's up
speaker-1: So Dylan, we know how how badly you wanted to be here. I w I wanted to give you an opportunity to check in with the boys.
speaker-3: my gosh, are you kidding me? I wouldn't miss this for the world.
speaker-1: We couldn't.
speaker-0: Even now you did for Idaho.
speaker-3: Yeah. Yeah, that's true. I'm all the way up in Idaho though, but hey, you know what? It doesn't matter because I'm still here.
speaker-0: That's right, baby.
speaker-2: We feel you, we feel you here, Dylan.
speaker-1: You want to ask him a couple questions, Adam, and then give him
speaker-0: Can you hear us, Dylan?
speaker-3: I can hear you guys loud and clear. Adam, ask me any question you want,
speaker-0: Hell yeah. We're waiting for your walk up music. Which one is it? It's this one.
speaker-1: Introduce him. Give him a proper introducing.
speaker-0: Welcome back to the 44X20 podcast. It is your favorite guest, Dylan Vaughn.
speaker-3: Let's go.
speaker-0: Thanks for thanks for joining us today. Hope you're having fun with the fam in Idaho. Dylan, I got a question for you, buddy. What separates a 3.5 from a 4.0 and a 4.0 from a 4.5? Tell us details, man. Talk to us.
speaker-3: Honestly, I think what separates a three point five and a four is you know, you you gotta you gotta be able to, you know, quit driving all the time. You gotta be able to learn how to drop, you know, it's it's all about the consistency as well. You know, if if you're consistently putting that ball in the kitchen, you know, you can elevate your game to to higher rankings. Does that make sense?
speaker-0: No, totally. That's that's a great answer. I agree with you. That third shot drop, baby, you got it.
speaker-3: That third shot drop is huge, It's huge. And you know
speaker-0: What about four out of four five? Is it the Bulgarian backhand? Talk to us, Dilly.
speaker-3: man You know
speaker-1: Adam's in the chair if you can't
speaker-3: what? I I I wish no, no, no, I know Adam's in the chair. I can tell by his voice. But
speaker-1: A superm.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-3: I know, I'm having some serious fear of missing out. But anyways I would say what separates a four point from a four point five is just being consistent, you know, getting getting consistent third shot drops over and Getting your serves in, I think that's really important. obviously chemistry is also an important factor, you know, if you can communicate with your partner, I would say that also separates you from a four to a four five.
speaker-0: Dylan, you have three body bags next time you come into the forty-four X Family podcast. Those were freaking great answers, my man. Sam, can I ask him another? Yeah, why not? Dylan, how much more time?
speaker-3: Me another man. Adam, you know what, for you, I got I got time, man, for you. Come on.
speaker-0: All
speaker-3: All right.
speaker-0: right, Dill Pickle. If you could instantly improve one part of your game, what would it be?
speaker-3: definitely my drives, man. I wish my drives were better. Honestly, I I try and drive it really hard and it just goes out all the time, you know. I need to simplify things. I need to change up my footwork a little bit and really pay attention to, you know, where I'm stepping before I drive and just I just need to be confident, you know. I think confidence is key and honestly with pickleball it is really important. Just being confident and being able to know that you're a really good player and you gotta tell yourself that before every match. And honestly I just think I need to improve on communication as well. You know, especially when I'm on the left. when I need to cover the middle and my down the line. You know, I need to be able to communicate to my partner and just basically be able to take control of a map. Does that make sense?
speaker-0: No, that's freaking awesome. I'm not gonna lie though, your drives looked pretty good on the body bag episode when Sam was when Sam had his mouthpiece in and his cup in JOCKSTRAPSAM He's still sore.
speaker-3: But that's you know what Adam, I dude, I I missed in the in the body back episode, you guys will see I've I missed a couple of shots on Sam, so he got lucky this time.
speaker-1: Pays to be skinny.
speaker-0: yeah, Dylan. yeah,
speaker-3: Please.
speaker-0: that was that was a lot of introspection. I I really like that. That was very introspective of you. Okay, last question and then we're gonna let you go, Dylan. You ready for that?
speaker-3: All right, man. Hey, shoot. Yeah, ask me.
speaker-0: Time out, time out. Sorry, Dylan. Come on the No Fanboy podcast. We can talk as much as you want.
speaker-3: Honest honestly Adam, I've but before you Adam before you start on
speaker-1: yeah. So part of the game tonight is that everybody has a what did we call it? A a ridiculous outcall? Yeah. An unchallenged outcall. Are you there, Dylan?
speaker-2: Challenged out call.
speaker-3: Yeah, I'm here.
speaker-1: So the rule of the night that everybody has one unchallenged outcall, meaning that in while anyone is being the host, we can say out and they c immediately are kicked out of the host chair. So I we Adam just got ousted out of the host chair.
speaker-3: Good. I was gonna do that actually.
speaker-0: You was gonna call you out. What do you mean? I was asking you questions. I was giving you a shine, bro.
speaker-1: You gotta glaze Adam because Adam doesn't fanboy on anybody. Not even his own cousin. Not even his own cousin.
speaker-0: Definitely not. All right.
speaker-1: Dylan, I'm gonna ask you one final question. So you've been on the 44X20 podcast in studio now twice. You're on it here over the phone. you you keep saying yes to me. We love having you. What's been your favorite part of being on the podcast?
speaker-3: my gosh, that's such a loaded question. dude, you're gonna make me cry right now. I'm getting a little emotional over here.
speaker-0: No, no, no! No 44 pounds about being vulnerable. Listen to from
speaker-3: But but honestly Sam, my my my answer to that question is I just honestly like being I think it's the people who I'm surrounded with in the podcasting room who make it great. Like make it a great experience. Does that make sense? Like Merv, Adam, you know, i all of those guys, like they just like make it home for me. And that's why I always want to come back because it also feels really good to like be able to like say what I wanna say and like be heard on the pod, you know, and like having all my friends with me and around me all the time, like it's great, man. I I wanna come back as many times as you guys will allow me to come back. I I can't wait for next week.
speaker-1: You always have a seat here at the baseline studio, Dylan.
speaker-0: Okay.
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-3: I'm I'm s I'm so I have so much adrenaline in me right now. I'm so fired up
speaker-1: Well, Dylan, I I I don't know. You left me kind of speechless. it's it's all warm and fuzzies over here. you know, I feel the same way. we talked about in the intro how much has changed for me and how much I've been growing and learning. and it feels a lot like the first time that I stepped on the pickleball court. Like no idea what I was getting into, a lot to learn, open minded, and all we've done is just laugh and have fun and get tighter. Mm-hmm. yeah. And that's what happens when you step in the baseline studio, and that's what happens when you step between the lines.
speaker-3: I mean, you're right, man. You're you're totally right. I'm I'm just really thankful for all the friendships that I've made so far through this forty four X twenty journey and I can't wait for more. I'm so excited.
speaker-1: Me too. Anyone else that they have anything else that they want to add? Yeah.
speaker-0: I do I do have one question. All right. So you What up My guy? What
speaker-3: What's up, Swervin Mervin?
speaker-0: up my guy?
speaker-1: Let me let me do this one time. All right.
speaker-0: You get to you have to pick one to date and pick one as a doubles partner, okay? Paris Todd and Alex Walker.
speaker-1: Yeah.
speaker-3: man, i y you know that I'm gonna take Alex Walker every time, man. Come on.
speaker-1: Wait, to what? Does w you get one as your doubles partner and one to date?
speaker-3: this is a big question.
speaker-0: A
speaker-3: Alright, alright. Well, to date Alex Walker for sure. Are you kidding me? Come on, man. Her resets, her drops, man. dude, if she was being my mixed goals partner, you know how many medals I'd have right now? Way too many to count, man. Are you kidding me? But
speaker-1: Wait, so
speaker-0: What is it? You said you said that
speaker-1: you You can't have both. I'd like to date Alex Walker. Do you know how many muscles I have? Question.
speaker-3: Yeah.
speaker-2: Everyone in this room would give you a medal if you were dating her.
speaker-0: Perfect that was the perfect answer. He's gonna date her and play pickleball with her.
speaker-3: Exactly. That that that was kind of where I was going with that. But honestly, like to date, I would say Alex Walker. And then wh who was the other person he had to talk about? Yeah, I I already
speaker-1: already forgot?
speaker-0: Fight.
speaker-3: forgot, but my memory kinda blanked out when you said Alex Walker. Sorry guys.
speaker-0: Alright guys, just a reminder that Dylan's looking for a mixed burner's deal.
speaker-3: Yeah, yeah. Al also, we're shopping music over this. Sam, but we do you want
speaker-0: Wait.
speaker-1: Hold on, let me f
speaker-3: Yeah, you gotta find the sappy music.
speaker-1: I don't know if I have it on here still. Well you'll have to you're just gonna have to use Susan and Debbie's Yeah, Dylan.
speaker-3: Alright, well anybody out there who's single, you know, I'm looking for a mixed doubles partner.
speaker-0: Ha ha ha!
speaker-3: And if if you want to date me too, you know where to find me. @Dylan.vaughn22 baby.
speaker-1: A
speaker-3: You're
speaker-1: See you on the courts. Alright guys, this has been a blast. I hope you had fun in the chair. Happy birthday to my guy Adam twenty-seven. Thank you to my guy Merv. you missed that part. Yeah, that was while we were waiting.
speaker-3: Birthday? Dude, Adam. Happy birthday, my brother.
speaker-1: It's on the twenty seventh. That's why we're calling him Adam twenty seven.
speaker-0: I'll be your doubles partner, bro.
speaker-3: bruh, you're the best. I was looking I was looking for a mixed doubles partner though.
speaker-0: Dude, I'm way hotter than Alex Walker. Come on.
speaker-1: Alright, for my guy, Adam27, Swervin Mervin, and the man, the unk of all unks, damn time. I'm Sam Orlansky, otherwise known as Mouthpiece, Sam, and we Yeah. here, I'll play this just for you guys. Ha ha. Wait, and we are
